Devyani indicted again

New York, March 14 (Agencies): Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade has been re-indicted on US visa fraud charges that touched off an international stir after she was arrested and strip-searched in New York last year.

With Khobragade in India, the new indictment does not appear to have any immediate practical consequences.

The new indictment was filed on Friday. It essentially reinstates the charges against Khobragade. On Wednesday, a judge dismissed the previous indictment on the ground of diplomatic immunity but left a door open to federal prosecutors to revive the case.

A spokesperson for Preet Bharara, the US Attorney in Manhattan, had said that Wednesday’s ruling did not bar prosecutors from seeking a new indictment based on the same charges, now that she has left the country.

The state department had said Khobragade had full immunity from prosecution only for a single day in January and no longer enjoyed protection from prosecution once she left the country.
