Calcutta: Karnataka got the better of Gujarat by 27 runs, in a Vijay Hazare Trophy quarter-final match, at the Jadavpur University Salt Lake Campus ground, on Tuesday.
After being invited to bat first, Karnataka overcame a jittery start to post a score of 301 for seven in 50 overs. Gujarat then chased it bravely, but were all out for 274 in 4.2 overs.
Earlier, three of Karnataka’s top five were out for a duck as they were reduced to 31 for four within the eighth over. But Robin Uthappa (132) and Karun Nair (120) stemmed the rot with a 209-run partnership. Jasprit Bumrah was the most successful Gujarat bowler with four wickets.
Gujarat’s chase was powered by Akshar Patel’s 93 and Rujul Bhatt’s 67. The others, however, couldn’t help the team despite getting starts.
Gujarat didn’t have a great start losing captain Parthiv Patel (4) in the very first over.
Gujarat lost two more wickets — Venugopal Rao and Abdulahad Malek — in quick succession. Then Akshar and Bhatt combined to rescue the team. But once Akshar was out, caught by Manish Agarwal off Vinay Kumar, the chase fell apart.
