Guwahati, March 11: A new face surfaced as the Saraighat Gym here hosted the silver jubilee edition of its flagship event, DS Group Mr Saraighat R.G. Baruah all-India classic body-building championship at ITA Cultural Centre here last evening.
Ram Niwas of Haryana shocked the likes of Asian champion Rahul Bisht of Railways and a few others to annex his maiden title at the national level. He was crowned Mr Saraighat by Padmashree and former Mr Universe Premchand Dogra. Body-builders from across the nation participated in the contest. Home favourite A. Boby Singh had to be content with the first runners-up title and Bisht was second runners-up on a stage which featured a number of former champions. Niwas went home richer by Rs 1 lakh while Singh and Bisht pocketed Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively. Organised in association with the Assam Body-Builders and Fitness Association, affiliated to Indian Body-Builders Federation and recognised by ministry of youth affairs and sports, the annual event comprised prize-money for the position holders to the tenth slot, worth a total of Rs 3.85 lakh. The fourth to 10th position holders included Javed Ali Khan (Railways), Sarbo Singh (Jharkhand), B. Maheswaram (Maharashtra), M. Robi Meitei (Assam), Bolaphrang Kharshiing (Meghalaya), Shyam Sharma (West Bengal) and Sumit Kumar Saikia (Assam) respectively.
