Sourav’s proposals approved by CAB

Calcutta: Sourav Ganguly’s proposals to rope in Waqar Younis and Muttiah Muralidharan as pace and spin bowling consultants for Bengal cricketers were approved by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) at its working committee meeting, on Monday.

Waqar and Muralidharan, who would be landing in the city on Friday evening, have entered into a three-year contract with the CAB and will draw around Rs 60 lakh annually. It will be a four-day camp, from March 15 to 18.

Former Bengal pacer Ranadeb Bose will be Waqar’s assistant in the pace department, while there’s still a doubt over who would assist Muralidharan as Utpal Chatterjee didn’t wish to be part of this endeavour.

Former off-spinner Saradindu Mukherjee’s name is doing the rounds, though.

Sourav himself will take care of batting pool and will be aided by Bengal coach Ashok Malhotra, Goutam Shome (Jr) and Bengal under-25 coach Joydeep Mukherjee.

“Everything has been passed. There’s confusion over who would be the assistant spin coach. Let’s see...Nonetheless, it’ll just be simple cricket coaching with Waqar and Murali and no rocket science.” Sourav said later.

“The cricketers will be picked from a screening camp. The first phase, beginning from March 15, will consist of 200 players. It will be for 30-35 days under Waqar and Murali, but local coaches will hold the camp throughout the year. The batting clinic will be held separately. I will be available (after the World T20), so we can do it at an appropriate time,” he added.
