Dhubri, March 10: Supporters of Wazed Ali Choudhury in Dhubri Congress are already celebrating after chief minister Tarun Gogoi announced his name as party candidate in New Delhi.
But his candidature is likely to be announced formally on March 13.
A party insider in New Delhi today said the dissidents tried to get the high command to nominate Rakibul Hussain from Dhubri but the plan failed to materialise.
A senior leader in Gogoi camp said by announcing Choudhury’s name and names of the other candidates, the chief minister silenced the dissidents in the state and cleared the way for a possible alliance with the AIUDF.
“Talks on a Congress alliance with the AIUDF were on till a few days back but failed in the end,” a source said.
Dhubri district Congress president Sushil Roy said names of the candidates announced by Gogoi in New Delhi were final and only a formal declaration by the AICC was awaited. “The names are being declared phase-wise and already 194 names are out. By March 13, all names will come out, including names of party candidates from Assam,” Roy added.
In athe BJP, the party members of various wings of Dhubri district unit are opposing the ticket to Saiful Islam, instead they want Debamoy Sanyal as the candidate.
Aggrieved with name of Islam doing the rounds in the state, the BJP workers demonstrated yesterday in front of party office here against fielding Islam from Dhubri Lok Sabha seat.
Talking to The Telegraph, the president of Dhubri town mondal committee, Sushanta Kar, said Islam has no contact with grassroots workers and people and hence giving him a ticket from Dhubri would be a blunder.
He said the party units favour Debamoy Sanyal, who is local and known to the people of Dhubri and is an active party worker.
A source in the AGP said the party is likely to field three times legislator from Bilasipara East in the district, Prasanta Kumar Barua, from Dhubri. Former minister Nurul Hussain was also seeking a party ticket from Dhubri, a party source said.
