Molest finger at primary teacher

Burdwan, March 10: A primary teacher in Burdwan has been accused of molesting a six-year-old girl in an empty classroom on Friday.

Shibu Singha, also a member of a Trinamul-backed teachers’ organisation, has been arrested and charged with molestation. Police said Singha had allegedly molested another girl six months ago but there was no complaint.

The Class I girl’s father, a farmer, said his daughter was unusually quiet after coming home from school on Friday and said she would no longer study. “After repeated pleas, she told me and my wife that her teacher had molested her after classes. She was scared to go to school on Saturday,” the girl’s father said.

This morning, the girl’s parents went to the school along with about 50 villagers. They dragged Singha out of class and beat him up with slippers before locking him in an empty classroom.

A team from the local police station rescued the 32-year-old teacher and arrested him on the basis of a complaint by the girl’s father.

Abhijeet Kundu, the district secretary of the Trinamul-backed teachers’ organisation of which Singha is a member, visited the police station with a few other members later in the day and cited conspiracy against the teacher. They urged the police to release Singha.

District police chief S.M.H Meerza said: “We have informed district magistrate Soumitra Mohan and the chairman of district primary school chairman, Debashis Nag.”

Local Trinamul leaders demanded strict punishment.
