Bankura, March 9: Two months after her death, Suchitra Sen is on poll graffiti in Bankura.
In the constituency where the late actress’s daughter is contesting as a Trinamul candidate, the wall writing describes Moon Moon Sen as the “worthy” daughter of the mahanayika.
“Vote for mahanayika’s worthy daughter Moon Moon Sen,” the graffiti, seen in villages across 40km, read.
Asked the reason for mentioning Suchitra Sen in the graffiti despite Moon Moon being a well-known actress, Bankura Trinamul Youth Congress president Debdas Das said: “Suchitra Sen is a legend in every Bengali household. Being her daughter, Moon Moon di will definitely appeal to voters.”
Most of the graffiti have come up in ward 20, where Das is the councillor.
While some residents said they were “fortunate” to get Moon Moon as the candidate, the actress admitted knowing little about the district.
“I have come here for shoots and street plays and have travelled a lot in the district. My cook is also from Bankura and I have visited his house. I definitely have a Bankura connection, but I am yet to know much about the place.”
Moon Moon has been pitted against the CPM’s Basudeb Acharya, a nine-time winner from the seat. Her maiden political foray against the CPM heavyweight has made the contest one of the toughest in the state.
BJP candidate Subash Sarkar, too, is a first-timer.
Sources said the Suchitra card was the “best way” to garner votes for Moon Moon in Bankura, which has traditionally been a Left bastion until the 2011 Assembly polls, when Trinamul started making inroads.
In the 2011 elections, Trinamul snatched four of the seven Assembly segments that make up the Bankura Lok Sabha seat.
Moon Moon has a pan-Bengal appeal as the daughter of Suchitra Sen, whose recent demise is likely to ensure better recall.
Although she is yet to visit her constituency since Mamata Banerjee announced her as the candidate from Bankura, Moon Moon said she was aware that local Trinamul leaders were using her mother’s name to appeal for votes for her.
“Mamatadi has become a family member. I had no hesitation in accepting her offer to make me the Trinamul candidate. I will go to Bankura and my mother would be there with me all along — in posters, messages, speeches and dialogues...,” the actress said.
Residents said although Moon Moon had done several street plays in Bankura, more people knew her as Suchitra Sen’s daughter.
“Moon Moon’s is a known name in most households here. But her mother was a much bigger name, especially for those who have seen her films with Uttam Kumar,” the manager of a Bankura hotel said.
CPM and BJP leaders in the district chose to remain tight-lipped about Suchitra Sen’s name figuring in the Trinamul poll graffiti.
Bankura Trinamul president Arup Khan said: “It is not surprising that the legendary actress’s name has been put in wall writings. After all, more than 70 per cent voters have seen Suchitra Sen’s films and she will always be well-known. It will be easy for voters to relate to her daughter because of Suchitra Sen.”
