Islampur, March 7: The official car of Hamidul Rehman, the Trinamul MLA of Chopra, was seized at Kishenganj in the neighbouring Bihar for flashing a red beacon in violation of the model code of conduct.
Kishenganj police detained Shahanwaz Alam, the 20-year-old son of Hamidul, and driver Md Sabbir. The MLA, who was allotted the car in his capacity as chairman of the government-run West Dinajpur Spinning Mills, was not in the vehicle.
Administrative sources in Kishenganj said a white Mahindra Scorpio (WB-74-AB-0417), was heading towards Islampur from the town on NH31 with the red beacon flashing atop. “As the SUV reached a crossing near Bal Mandir School in town around 6pm, it was stopped. A case was registered by police for violation of model code of conduct,” said a source.
“First of all, the MLA is not entitled to a red beacon. Second, the code of conduct is in force now and no public representative can use the red beacon,” added the source.
The MLA couldn’t be contacted. His close aide confirmed the seizure of the car and detention of his son and driver.
