Santiniketan, March 7: The proctor of Visva-Bharati resigned today citing “unavoidable circumstances”.
Sources in the varsity, however, said Samit Roy’s resignation was linked to a series of raids he had conducted in the varsity’s hostels.
Roy declined to comment. He will, however, remain botany professor of the varsity.
The sources said that after joining as proctor, Roy’s first initiative was to identify outsiders living in the hostels.
“Roy tried to take several steps to enforce discipline in the hostels. A section of varsity officials thought he was being too strict with the hostel inmates,” an official said.
