Garo hills peace rally on Sunday

Tura, March 6: A conglomeration of various organisations today launched a peace movement in Garo hills.

They have sought public participation in a mass prayer and peace rally, which will be held on Sunday in Garo hills.

In Tura, the mass prayer and peace rally will be held at Chandmari playground from 2pm, led by the president of the A’chik Baptist Dalgipa Krima, Rev. R.D. Shira. The exhortation will be delivered by Rev. Fr Januarius Sangma and benediction by Rev. Boomerin C. Marak.

Addressing reporters here, Rev. Fr Januarius said, “This is an attempt to unite people from all communities to work in unity for restoration of peace and normality in Garo hills. We will appeal to people to work and pray for peace and become agents of peace and progress.”

“Our forum will act as a facilitator between the government and the underground groups for holding peace parleys,” he added.

The GNLA yesterday urged Meghalaya governor K.K. Paul to appoint United Christian Peace Forum to act as mediator. To this, Fr. Januarius said, “The Forum has given us the go-ahead to form a new organisation for Garo hills which we have named Unified Peace Movement. We formed the organisation after Forum gave us a verbal approval to launch a peace movement in the region.”

The chairperson of the new organisation, Mariam D. Shira, said, “Through this rally we will appeal to the insurgents to shun violence and come forward for talks. We will also appeal to the Centre and state government to invite outfits to talks.”

The mass prayer and peace rally will also be held in Williamnagar, Baghmara, Ampati, Tikrikilla and Purakhasia on the same day.
