Prizing 1000 hearty smiles

Brahmananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital in Tamolia, 16km from Jamshedpur, has achieved a milestone in cardiac treatment.

With an artery bypass grafting on elderly Mango resident Sukra Francis Toppo last month, it became the first heal hub in the steel city to complete 1,000 heart operations in a short span of four years.

Taking deserved pride in the achievements, senior cardiac surgeon Perwaiz Alam, who himself has 5,500 surgeries to his credit, said the success rate has been 97.8 per cent since the hospital’s inception in July 2009.

The figure includes 588 bypass grafts, 218 valve surgeries, 158 congenital heart OTs and 36 vascular surgeries.

The hospital also has to its credit many firsts in the state and in eastern India. The youngest patient — a newborn boy — was recently operated on for ectopia cordis, a rare condition with extremely high mortality rate.

The oldest patient was a 90-year-old woman who underwent a bypass surgery.

The first cardiac OT was performed in July 2009 on a 19-year-old male who had a hole in his heart. He had to undergo an open heart surgery.

Hospital records revealed that of the 1,000 patients, 753 were from Jharkhand, 104 from Bengal, 76 from Odisha, 25 from Bihar, 12 from Uttar Pradesh, seven from Chhattisgarh and the rest 13 NRIs .

Alam said two-third of these patients were sponsored by either a trust or a service organisation. “We are happy to achieve this milestone. We will continue to provide the best of healthcare facilities," he said.

Appreciating the efforts of dedicated doctors, Vineet Saini, director (facility) of Brahmananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, said: “I take the opportunity to congratulate the cardiac team for this distinction. A model of tertiary cardiac care of highest quality, this hospital is unique in the field of healthcare delivery system in the state. Our facility here in Jamshedpur is on a par with the country’s best cardiac hospitals and comes at an affordable price. We endeavour to live up to the expectations of our patients.”

The department of cardiac sciences at the hospital specialises in interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and pediatric cardiac surgery. It has also conducted numerous cath lab procedures like angiography and angioplasty.
