Malda, March 3: A first-year student of Pakua College was arrested last night on the suspicion of being linked to KLO leader Malkhan Singh and for alleged involvement in an extortion bid.
The youth was picked up from the same village in Habibpur from where a 17-year-old Madhyamik examinee and a garage mechanic, Dipu Mahato, who were arrested on Saturday, came from.
Police said the college student was picked up from his home last night. He has been remanded in five days’ police custody. A police officer said the youth was arrested following the interrogation of the Madhyamik examinee, who was held yesterday for making extortion calls to a businessman in Malda and demanding Rs 50,000.
Bipin Chandra Mondal, a BJP anchal president of Mangalpura in Habibpur, had also lodged a complaint with the police on February 28 alleging that he had received calls from Malkhan demanding Rs 5 lakh.
Malda police chief Rajesh Yadav said the college student “has direct links with Malkhan…. We are checking if he had any link to the case lodged by the BJP leader.”
