Assam cops win opener

Sivasagar, March 3: Assam Police Blues blanked Food Corporation of India SC 2-0 in the all-Guwahati inaugural match of the sixth Assam State Premier League football tournament at Piyoli Phukan Stadium here today.

The policemen scored both the goals in the first half through Golap Rabha in the 24th minute and Lohit Taye in the 35th minute.

In another match at Raisai Stadium in adjoining Demow, Radial Club, Nagaon, handed a solitary goal defeat to Sports Authority of India, Kokrajhar.

The Assam Football Association tournament is being organised here as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Sivasagar Sports Association. Sports minister Ajit Singh formally inaugurated the tournament. The final will be held at Piyoli Phukan Stadium on March 15.

Financial aid: The Assam government today extended financial assistance to the family of judo player Montu Ram Barman who sustained serious injuries after falling from a running train in Allahabad on February 25.

Chess coaching: PC Borooah Chess Academy is organising a special chess coaching camp from March 14 to 21 on the academyís premises in Guwahati.
