Calcutta: East Bengal striker Edeh Chidi ruffled a few feathers after pulling out of Saturday’s I-League Derby between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, on Saturday.
Chidi’s name was missing from the teamsheet and, at the post-match media conference, Armando Colaco looked upset with the Nigerian. “He sent me a text message that he would not be able to play today’s match since he aggravated his hamstring injury. I requested him but he refused. I told him to come to the ground for the sake of the team, but he told me to understand his problem. I told him to understand mine, but he said he was not in a position to come,” Colaco said.
Chidi injured his right hamstring during the Dempo match last Sunday, but did not look uncomfortable during Friday’s strenuous practice session. “I should not have gone through the rigours on Friday and just confined myself to the gym. That practice session aggravated my injury. I am still in pain,” Chidi said late on Saturday.
A club source said Chidi’s AWOL (absence without leave) did not go down well with the players and the officials too.
The club officials were also not aware of the development. “It was in the afternoon that we came to know Chidi was not playing. We will ask for a medical report. We cannot let this go on,” the senior club official said. The official informed that a decision on Chidi will be taken only on Sunday.
