Trader shot dead in capital

A 45-year-old businessman was shot dead on Bariatu Road in Ranchi on Thursday afternoon.

Resident of Lamp Basti in Bargaain, Kewla Kachchap was biking towards Karamtoli Chowk around 2.15pm when an unidentified man on another two-wheeler fired two rounds on him near Seventh Day Adventist Hospital in Sadar police station area of the capital.

Kachchap took one bullet on the head and fell off his bike. Local residents rushed him to RIMS, where doctors declared him brought dead.

According to a resident, they heard gunshots and rushed out of their respective homes and shops. “No one saw the killer. He had fled by the time we rushed to tend to the victim. Our priority was to take the man to hospital,” he said.

Sadar OC Ranjeet Kumar Sinha confirmed the shooting and said they would soon begin investigations.

“After the incident, people blocked Ranchi-Booty Road in protest. We had to take care of the law and order situation first. So far, all we know is that two rounds were fired. One fatally wounded Kachchap, the other missed target. The body is at RIMS for post-mortem,” Sinha said.

City SP Manoj Ratan echoed him. He, however, hinted at a domestic dispute. “Family members have pointed a finger to Kachchap’s in-laws. But, we have not reached any conclusion yet,” he said.

The victim’s brother lodged an FIR around 6.30pm.
