76-run victory for India colts

Dubai: The Indian under-19 team rode all-rounder Deepak Hooda’s brilliant performance to beat Sri Lanka U-19 by 76 runs in the fifth-place play-off semi-final, here, on Monday.

Hooda first blasted 76 off just 56 deliveries to propel India to 291, and then took three wickets to help bowl Sri Lanka out for 215.

India will face either Afghanistan or West Indies in the fifth-place playoff final on Thursday, at Sharjah.

Batting first, India raced to 57 inside 10 overs. Openers Ankush Bains and Akhil Herwadkar fell within three overs of each other, but Shreyas Iyer (59) and Sanju Samson (40) added 87 for the third wicket as India made inroads during the middle overs.

Sri Lanka fought back with four quick wickets, but Hooda and Kuldeep Yadav shared an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 81 runs from just 53 balls, meaning that Sri Lanka had to score at almost six an over.
