A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped and dumped by her neighbour near a river late on Sunday night.
The girl, admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for tests, was allegedly lured by Gauri Shankar (32), who lives in the same locality at Jharkha village under the Sigaudi police station area of Patna rural.
The accused is said to be absconding at present. “According to the FIR lodged, the girl was outside her home in the late evening hours when Gauri Shankar came along and lured the girl with an excuse. She was taken around 2km away from the village on the banks of a river where she was allegedly raped for hours. After this, once the girl lost consciousness, she was dumped there. Since the night itself, the girl’s family members started to look for her. They searched the girl throughout the night only to find her early morning. She was carried back home and once she regained consciousness, she narrated the incident to her family. The family members informed us immediately,” an officer at Sigaudi police station said.
The police said the girl, who studies in a local government school, did not doubt the motives of the man. “The man is a neighbour and the family knows him well. Hence, she never doubted his motives. Right now, a detailed statement of the girl is to be taken and it will be done after she recovers from the shock and medically, too. The family has named Gauri Shankar in the FIR and the police are looking for his whereabouts. He will be nabbed soon and the police are working on several leads at present,” the officer said.
In most of the rape cases, it had been found that girls fell victims to persons known to them. Particularly in the villages, where the inter-family bondings are better as a community than in the urban areas, such criminal cases are not very uncommon that family members and people of the same neighbourhood molest girls.
There have been several incidents in the city where women and girls have found themselves being abused and teased recently. On February 3, a girl, alleging eve-teasing and abuse in the hands of two youths, lodged an FIR with Beur police station.
On January 28, a girl was allegedly abused and teased while she was returning home from her tuitions at Fraser Road under the Gandhi Maidan police station area. In July last year, a girl was lured away from her home and was molested by a minor youth in the Paschimi Gali area under Alamganj police station of Patna City.
“The number of such incidents has come down at least in the state capital area. The city has a number of CCTV cameras now and is always under surveillance. Also, there are policemen in civil clothes patrolling time and again to catch hold of eve-teasers and snatchers. The police are working in a bid to stop such incidents,” a senior police officer said.
However, such facilities are still a distant dream for the women in the rural areas. Except a few areas around the Gandhi Maidan, major arterial roads and key residential areas in the state capital, such cameras have not come much of a help to rest of the people in and around the city. Senior officers said they were trying to change this also.
Assault on minors
Two minor girls of Ramjita village under Bishambharpur police station in Gopalganj were allegedly raped on Sunday evening when they had gone to attend nature’s call.
The two youths — Bajrangi Yadav and Amarjit Chauhan — also tried to abduct the girls after raping them, but the villagers saw and captured them. After beating them, the villagers handed them over to police. An FIR on the statement of one of the victims was lodged on Monday against the accused and they were sent to jail. The victims were sent for medical examination.
