Raiganj, Feb. 23: The family of a student of Raiganj University College have complained to the North Dinajpur police superintendent and the West Bengal Human Rights Commission, alleging that cops had beaten him up and arrested him illegally.
Simanta Sarkar, 21, a resident of Panisalahat, is currently in the police lock-up in the district hospital. The Raiganj police said they had been looking for Sarkarís father in a theft case.
A case was been registered against the student for allegedly obstructing the police when they went to his house on February 11 to arrest the father. The police said the youth had been arrested when he had been admitted to the hospital on February 20.
An inquiry has been launched into the complaint.
