Assam squad named

Guwahati, Feb. 23: The Assam Cricket Association yesterday named the state senior team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy East Zone limited-over cricket tournament to be held in Ranchi from February 27 to March 7. However, no one has been named skipper yet.

Though Abu Nechim Ahmed had captained Assam to the final of the tournament last year and been the captain for the Ranji Trophy matches this season, he has not been able to participate regularly in the trials this time due to IPL trials and personal inconveniences, ACA sources said, adding that he was thus not a choice for the skipper.

The selectors are left with the options of Gokul Sharma and outstation professionals Dheeraj Jadhav and Syed Mohammad for the position. Gujarat recruit Niraj Patel, who has better career statistics in the shorter version of the game, has missed a berth in the squad as he could not impress the selectors during the Ranji Trophy tournament.

The 15-member squad comprises three new faces with Rajdeep Das, Romario Sharma and Chanakya Sarma replacing Kunal Saikia, Patel and Sujoy Tarafdar who figured in the last Ranji match of the season.

Top order batsman Rishav Das, who had earlier suffered a foot injury, has made it to the squad with marked improvement in his condition.

Krishna Das, Wasiqur Rahman and Amar Alam have been named standbys. Assam, who were the runners-up last year, will open the campaign against Tripura on February 27, followed by fixtures with Odisha on March 1, hosts Jharkhand on March 5 and Bengal on March 7.

The squad:

Abu Nechim Ahmed, Dheeraj Jadhav, Rishav Das, Sibsankar Roy, Parvez Aziz, Gokul Sharma, Tajinder Singh, Syed Mohammad, Rajdeep Das (wk), Arup Das, Pritam Das, Amit Sinha, Romario Sharma, Chanakya Sarma, Prasanta Sonowal; Manager— Anil Borah, coaches — Subhrajit Saikia and Subhadeep Ghosh, physio —Parmeet Singh and trrainer —Tauhid Ali Talukdar.
