New Delhi, Feb. 23: A girl from Assam was gang-raped in Delhi yesterday by two youths from her home state, one of whom she had eloped with recently, police said.
Rahul and his friend Harun, in their twenties, hail from Tezpur in Assam. They were arrested last night, hours after the assault in Harun’s house in Mahipalpur on Delhi’s southern fringes, the police said.
Rahul and the girl, said to be 20 years old, had eloped from Tezpur, the police said. The couple first went to Kerala and reached Delhi on Friday. Rahul took the girl to Harun’s house where the duo raped her yesterday afternoon, police sources said.
The case comes against the backdrop of the recent outcry at crimes against people from the Northeast in Delhi, mostly by locals, amid claims of racist overtones.
While the two suspects in yesterday’s incident are from the victim’s home state and apparently knew her, it swivelled the spotlight back on the issue as the assault occurred in Delhi where police have faced allegations of not doing enough to protect people from the Northeast.
Pressure has grown on the force since last month’s death of Arunachal student Nido Tania after a beating by shopkeepers, in which the police were accused of not trying to save him. A Northeast cell has been set up in the police headquarters.
But the crimes haven’t stopped. A 14-year-old Manipur girl was raped by her landlord’s son in south Delhi’s Munirka, where a large number of people from the Northeast live, just over a fortnight ago.
Yesterday, a youth from Manipur was assaulted near JNU and his ATM card and money snatched. Three suspects have been picked up.
