Arpita Ghosh, a 22-year-old constable in the 2nd armed battalion of state police, was arrested on Saturday for her alleged role in the disappearance and death of a colleague.
Uttam Mudi, 22, had gone missing on February 9 from his barracks at Latbagan. His body was found on the railway tracks between Titagarh and Barrackpore railway stations, about a kilometre from the barracks, on February 13. His face was so mutilated that he could be identified only from his clothes.
Police said they found from Uttam’s call details that he and Arpita spoke regularly till the day he went missing.
The police are not sure whether Uttam was murdered or had committed suicide. “We are awaiting the autopsy report,” an officer said.
Arpita too was missing from the barracks in Barrackpore since February 5, he said.
She apparently told investigators about her affair with Uttam.
