Student beaten for ‘kissing’ in room

Feb. 22: A first-year student of Burdwan Homeopathic College was allegedly assaulted by residents after they claimed they found him kissing a classmate in his rented home last night.

The 19-year-old student, who suffered bruises on his nose, appeared in a college exam today. His female classmate, who was allegedly abused verbally by the neighbours, also took the test.

Police sources said the girl had come to the boy’s room, which he shares with four other students, around 8 last night to “discuss studies”. The other boys were not in the room.

Some of the neighbours said the boy and the girl, who hail from different states, were “caught kissing” in the room.

“The neighbours barged into the room and started assaulting the boy and abusing the girl. Five or six classmates who live in the neighbourhood rushed in and a scuffle broke out between them and the residents. The boy was slapped and punched,” an officer said.

The police have detained one of the neighbours, a Burdwan University employee, for questioning.

The deputy resident commissioner of the state from which the assaulted boy hails said he was “happy” with the way the Burdwan administration had handled the incident. Around 15 students of the college who hail from the state have been shifted to a “safer place” by the administration.

A resident said people in the area were “feeling disturbed” by the frequent visits by female students of the college to the rented rooms of their male “outstation” classmates.

A roommate of the assaulted student said the male and female students visited each others’ homes to “exhange notes”.
