CM eludes Nancy

Calcutta, Feb. 21: US ambassador Nancy Powell tried her luck at meeting Mamata Banerjee without an assured appointment in Calcutta but returned this evening after calling on the governor and interacting with a few others.

Sources in the state government said the meeting could not take place as the chief minister was preoccupied with other engagements.

“The request from the US side for a meeting today reached us sometime last week and we had replied that it was not possible today because of some other engagements. But it was also conveyed that a date can be fixed after February 26,” said a state government official.

Sources in the US consulate said Powell’s failure to meet Mamata was a “disappointment”. The US ambassador to India had met Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi last week.

Powell called on governor M.K. Narayanan at Raj Bhavan. She also met some businessmen of Calcutta and students of Modern High School during her brief visit.
