Ranchi: Drag-flicker Sandeep Singh struck twice from penalty corners to help Punjab Warriors beat defending champions Ranchi Rhinos 3-2 in the Hockey India League, here, at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, on Wednesday.
Sandeep scored in the 21st and 52nd minutes while Kieran Govers got the other goal for the Warriors in the 30th minute by converting another penalty corner. Captain Moritz Furste (14th) and Ashley Jackson scored for the home side — also from penalty corners.
All the five goals of the match were scored from penalty corners. Both sides, though, qualified for the semi-finals along with Delhi Waveriders and Uttar Pradesh Wizards. The Warriors ended the league stage on top of the table with 40 points from 10 matches.
The Waveriders were second on 39 points, while the Wizards and Rhinos were on 28 and 26 points, respectively. “It always feels good to win. Saturday will be a tough game because Ranchi Rhinos will surely come back stronger. They have great players and we will have to double our strength to stop them in semi-finals,” Warriors captain Jamie Dwyer said after the match. (Agencies)
