Custody death stink

Behrampore, Feb. 16: A 26-year-old Congress supporter arrested last afternoon in Murshidabad in a kidnapping case was found hanging in the bathroom of his prison cell with a muffler tied to the neck.

District superintendent of police Humayun Kabir said Rajiv Mollah had committed suicide. The Congress worker’s wife, Bela Bibi, has lodged an FIR accusing the officer in charge of Raninagar police station, Biplab Karmakar, of beating her husband to death.

Following the complaint, Kabir, who visited the police station later this evening, has relieved sub-inspector Anil Biswas of all duties. Biswas, who was on duty when the alleged suicide took place, has been sent to Behrampore police lines.

State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury accused the police of beating Rajiv to death. “The police have beaten to death our party supporter Rajiv Mollah. We demand compensation for the family and punishment for those responsible for his death.”

Asked about Chowdhury’s allegation, district police chief Kabir said: “After we get the report, it will be clear if he it was a suicide or murder.”
