Calcutta: Swapan Mahapatra, a photojournalist, was critically injured when a firecracker burst near him and its splinter penetrated his lower rib region, during the IFA Shield final between Mohammedan Sporting and Dhanmondi Club, at the Salt Lake Stadium, on Saturday.
The splinter penetrated his lower rib region from the right side. Bleeding profusely after being hit, he was taken to a nearby hospital.
Doctors attending to him said the splinter was in the right lobe of the liver and a portion of his lungs was also damaged.
However, the doctors said that he was stable but critical. He is under observation for 48 hours. The doctors, though, ruled out surgery in order to remove the splinter, saying it would be too risky.
The incident happened during the added time of the first half after Mehrajuddin Wadoo equalised for Mohammedan Sporting.
The goal sent the 65,000-odd fans into a tizzy. Some of them lighted firecrackers in the stands and hurled towards the ground. And one of them burst near the photojournalist.
