Dhanmondi incensed, feel cheated

Calcutta: A furious Dhanmondi Club boycotted the prize distribution ceremony of the IFA Shield after they believed there was a conspiracy to make sure they did not win the final, on Saturday.

“We were cheated… They did not want us to win. It would have been very humiliating for Calcutta football if we had won the Shield,” a senior player said after the match. “Wedson’s goal in injury-time was legitimate. But surprisingly the referee (MB Santhosh Kumar) ruled it offside,” he added.

But television replays clearly showed both Wedson and Emeka Darlington were offside by a mile.

Dhanmondi were also not aware of the tournament rules. After Haiti’s Sony Nordy was shown the red card, Dhanmondi tried to bring in Nigerian Amisu Abdulahi in place of a Bangladeshi player. Rules say that a foreigner can be brought in place of a foreigner only.

Meanwhile, the Mohammedan Sporting officials announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh and the state government promised to give Rs 5 lakh.
