Around 5000 sankirtan artistes under the banner of Nikhil Utkal Sankirtan Mahasangha staged a demonstration near the Assembly on Wednesday pressing for their five-point charter of demands. Madan Mohan Dash, general secretary of the Mahasangha, said that these artistes were registered with the state government and they had been used for spreading awareness on various people-friendly programmes of the government. “But, we have been living under abject poverty. Though we have been presenting our demands before the government for long, no one ever pays any heed to us,” said Dash. They also demanded a maintenance corpus of Rs 10,000 for each sankirtan troupe. In the evening, they met officials at the chief minister’s office and submitted a memorandum. Text by Sandip Bal, picture by Ashwinee Pati
