Third plea to extend parole

Sanjay Dutt

Mumbai, Feb. 9: Sanjay Dutt has sought a third extension of his parole on the ground that his wife Maanyata is recovering from liver tumour surgery, police sources said.

The sources said Sanjay had filed the application before Prabhakar Deshmukh, divisional commissioner of Pune where the actor had been lodged in Yerwada Jail before heading home in December.

Deshmukh is learnt to have sought a report from police in Mumbai’s Bandra, where the Dutts live, before taking a decision.

The police are likely to consult Dr Ajay Chaughule, the cardio-thoracic surgeon treating Maanyata. Asked about the latest request, Deshmukh said: “I am travelling to Delhi and it’s possible that his (Sanjay’s) application has reached my office. But I haven’t personally seen it yet.”

Sanjay, serving a 42-month sentence in an arms case related to the 1993 Bombay blasts, left jail on December 21 on a 30-day parole. The 54-year-old was granted an extension on January 20, a day before he was to return to jail. He has time till February 21.

After Sanjay was granted parole, two more convicts were given the relief, including his arms act co-accused Zaibunissa Qazi, 71.
