Police hunt for kidnap couple

Police have launched a hunt for a couple — the alleged masterminds behind the kidnapping of the son of hotelier and realtor Mohan Kumar Khandelwal.

Kotwali police said Khandelwal had employed Girish Kumar and his wife Anamika as a driver and a receptionist at his hotel, respectively, a couple of months ago. The duo were considered close to Khandelwal. He was shocked to learn about their involvement in the kidnapping of his son Shivam, a Class IX student of St Joseph’s High School.

An investigating officer said Khandelwal did not suspect the involvement of Girish in the abduction of his son for ransom on Friday till the police showed him some evidence. “He was so shocked that he wanted to teach him a lesson on the spot (if found),” the officer said.

Shivam was rescued from Dhanpura village in Ara on Saturday morning. But Girish gave police the slip.

The officer said the details about the couple had been procured from their employer and raids had been launched to apprehend them. “It is obvious that the boy was kidnapped for ransom. The abductors had even contacted the family for ransom,” he added.

Deputy superintendent of police (law and order) Mamta Kalyani said the criminal antecedents of the couple were being verified. “Since the employer had not done the police verification of the driver, we are in the dark about his antecedents,” she said.

A team of officers has been sent to Bhojpur to gather information about his background. “Raids have been conducted both in Patna and Bhojpur besides other hideouts to apprehend the prime accused,” she told The Telegraph.

City superintendent of police Jayant Kant said the couple would be brought to book soon. “The police have stepped up the operation,” he added.

Earlier, Patna senior superintendent of police Manu Maharaaj said the case would be put on speedy trial so that the culprits could be prosecuted at the earliest. “We have enough evidence against the accused. The case is being probed on the basis of scientific evidence,” he said.

The police used the latest technology to spot the abductors and rescue the kidnapped teenager, Shivam, from their clutches. Two persons — Pradeep Kumar Pathak, who works with a travel firm in Bangalore, and CRPF jawan Abhishek Singh were arrested.
