Birbhum poll murder arrest

Bolpur, Feb. 9: A Birbhum Trinamul leader has been arrested in connection with the murder of a party rebel’s father before the panchayat polls in July last year.

Sheikh Yunus is the first among the 41 people named in the FIR to be arrested by the CID. The complaint also mentions Anubrata Mondal, the Birbhum Trinamul chief.

The arrest last night came close on the heels of the high court admonishing the state investigating agency for failing to conduct a “proper probe” into the murder of Sagar Ghosh.

Sagar Ghosh was shot dead on July 21 last year by suspected Trinamul activists, four days after Mondal told party cadres at a rally to “burn down” houses of party rebels contesting as Independents and “hurl bombs” at police if they came to the rescue.

Sagar’s son Hriday had unsuccessfully contested the rural polls as an Independent.

Yunus, the Trinamul anchal pradhan of Kasba, was one of those who had fired at Sagar at his home in Bandhnabagram village, according to the complaint lodged by Sagar’s relatives.

A senior police officer said: “Attempts are on to arrest the others.” He, however, declined comment when asked if the Birbhum Trinamul chief would also be arrested.
