Contractor’s body found in Garo hills

Tura, Feb. 6: The bodies of abducted contractor Rutherford Marak and two unidentified men were recovered this evening at Darechikgre between Daribokgre and Sakalgre villages in West Garo Hills, about 20km from here.

West Garo Hills SP Mukesh Singh said, “The bodies were found in Darechikgre jungle. We have identified Rutherford Marak. The identity of the other two are yet to be known. Post-mortem will be done tomorrow and the bodies will be brought to Tura after that.”

Police said the magisterial inquest was completed at Daribokgre. Rutherford, a resident of Araimile, was abducted on Tuesday from Sasatgre, while he was on his way to Nokrek. He was accompanied by another contractor, Manseng Marak, for implementation of the rural electrification project under Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Limited (MeECL). The suspected militants assaulted the duo. When Manseng fainted, he was left behind.

According to Manseng, the militants shouted slogans in the name of breakaway faction of A’chik National Volunteers Council (ANVC-B) while taking Rutherford along with them. However, the outfit, in an email to media houses, had denied their involvement in the abduction and killing.

Since Tuesday, police have been scouring Sasatgre-Chandigre region all the way upto the Nokrek biosphere reserve. Police said the trio were shot dead at Darechikgre. Manseng had informed Rongram police station of the incident, after which the police swung into action. Till this afternoon, the police were clueless about the abduction. They continued their search and recovered the three bodies at 4pm. Manseng is undergoing treatment at Tura civil hospital.
