Calcutta: Dhanmondi Club brushed aside United Sikkim FC (USFC) 3-1 in a Group II match of the IFA Shield, at the Salt Lake Stadium, here, on Wednesday.
The Dhaka-based club now has three points from two matches and brace up for a must-win tie against Mohun Bagan, on Saturday.
If they draw or lose against Bagan, who have four points now, they will be out of the tournament. A victory for Dhanmondi means they will face East Bengal in one of the semi-finals.
Dhanmondi shot into the lead as early as in the fifth minute when Wedson Anselme tapped in Emeka Darington’s centre.
In the 27th minute, they got their second. On this occasion, Sony Nordy’s measured centre found Emeka who made no mistake in slotting it home.
Dhanmondi could have got two more in the first half itself. Once Nordy freed Emeka on the right and the latter’s brilliant volley hit the horizontal.
And then, Nordy was denied by USFC goalkeeper Dibyendu Sarkar. A stunning free-kick by the Haiti midfielder was brilliantly saved by Dibyendu.
USFC pulled one back in the 75th minute. Substitute Mayal Lepcha’s pass found an unmarked Somide Adeleja, who lobbed it over an onrushing Ziaur Rahman.
Dhanmondi did not have to wait long for their third. Capitalising on USFC’s defensive blunder, substitute Amisu Abdulahi hit the back of the net without any trouble.
In the 73rd minute, Emeka was injured after a collision with an USFC player. He was taken to a private hospital, and was discharged after undergoing tests.
