The modi show

What: BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s pre-election rally in Calcutta

Where: Brigade Parade Grounds

Rally begins: 1pm

Modi arrives: 1.30pm

Modi speaks: 2pm

Rally ends: 3pm

Expected turnout: A lakh, say police. BJP state president Rahul Sinha claims it would be “big” but refuses to give a number

Possible disruption: BJP activists will start marching towards the rally venue from various city pockets around 11am. Supporters are expected to gather at Howrah, Sealdah and Calcutta stations. Many are expected to come by road from South and North 24-Parganas

Roads to avoid: Police say Wednesday’s gathering won’t disrupt traffic. There will be no traffic curbs in and around the venue. “We will try to ensure traffic movement remains normal even during the meeting,” said a traffic department officer.

Security drill: Around 3,000 cops in uniform and plainclothes will man Brigade and its adjoining areas. People who wish to get a closer view of Modi will have to walk through a series of door-frame metal detectors and be frisked at several points. Six watch towers and 30 CCTV cameras have been installed on the ground.

Calcutta police started round-the-clock anti-sabotage activities in and around the venue 48 hours before the event.
