Calcutta: Mohammed Rafique and Ranty Martins were on target as United SC began their IFA Shield title defence with a fine 2-1 win over Busan Sun Moon FC in Saturday’s Group II tie, here, at the Salt Lake Stadium.
Both sides were locked 1-1, going into half-time. Rafique put United SC ahead in the 43rd minute, pushing home a centre from Dhanachandra Singh. The lead, though, was sustained for just a minute or so as Kim Jong Woo quickly levelled the proceedings.
Kim equalised with a right-footed grounder from top of the box. A better work from the United SC defenders and goalkeeper Abhijit Das, who was pretty slow to react, could well have denied the South Korean. The visitors were clearly the dominant side in the second session with a flurry of chances coming their way. But United SC had the last laugh as Ranty stood up just when it mattered.
