Deepa fasts for AIIMS clone

Calcutta, Jan. 31: Deepa Das Munshi today started an indefinite hunger strike in Calcutta along with 54 other Congress leaders to protest the state government’s alleged move to shift the AIIMS-like hospital from Raiganj and also to highlight a host of other issues.

Shakeel Ahmed Khan, AICC observer for Bengal, attacked Mamata Banerjee at the launch of the fast.

“She is talking non-sense (anaap-shanaap) and dreaming about going to Delhi. She said ‘Delhi chalo’ to end rajtantra (dynastic rule). I don’t know if she has read history… Long back, loktantra (democracy) replaced rajtantra,” said Khan.

Yesterday, Mamata had called for change in Delhi.

“She says she has got the key to the government. She has only 19 MPs and the Congress has 206…. How can the key be with her? Congress has a presence throughout the country, where is Trinamul?…. She is making empty noises,” said Khan.

The fast is being undertaken at the Gandhi statue near Mayo Road. The fast was also to highlight the deposit scam and rise of crimes against women in the state.

Deepa, the junior minister for urban development at the Centre, said: “The chief minister said she went on hunger strike for 26 days… I don’t know how long I would be able to carry on but we will try.”

Former Trinamul MP Somen Mitra who had returned to the Congress 10 days ago was also present at the venue.
