What started as an acoustic platform for artistes like Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Nirvana, Bob Dylan and several others in 1989 took an interesting (for the lack of a better word!) shape in the hands of Miley Cyrus on January 29 in Los Angeles. The latest hour-long episode of MTV Unplugged was a stripped-down affair… in every sense of the term. Here are some highlights from the show in which, some believe, the pop torch was passed from Madonna to Miley Cyrus, even though the same was said when Maddy performed with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 VMA!
The party ended with a mash-up of two hit songs –– Madonna’s Don’t Tell Me (2000) and Miley’s 2013 hit We Can’t Stop. Madge, 55, made her appearance in a black outfit and cowboy hat to match the 21-year-old’s sequinned denim bikini and white hat. The whistles got louder when Madonna did the grind up and down Miley, then got down and dirty with some butt-slapping and ended their raunchy performance by sticking out their tongues.

The set opened with Miley, wearing a blonde wig and a onesie that resembled a tablecloth, announcing “C’mon ya’ll! Let’s do this!” and she quickly moved into first gear with the song 4x4. But her foot was always on the pedal. She felt herself up and twerked with two people dressed in a horse costume!
“My wig’s about to fall off, I’m having too much fun up here,” she announced and next came the quote of the show: “I tried to bring a little Nashville here tonight. When I say ‘hoe’ you say ‘down’.” Soon, the onesie gave way to a bikini top and shiny pants. After all, the temperature was soaring! “I don’t think I’ve ever sweat so much in a bikini,” she told the crowd.
Godmother Dolly Parton
Whether the legendary country singer tuned in or not we don’t know, but Miley tried to highlight her country roots with her version of the 1973 hit Jolene, a song about a woman coming face to face with Jolene, who’s trying to steal her man. And she did a pretty good job in this tribute to her godmother. The singer even had a full band with string sections to make her set sound great.
