Balurghat, Jan. 29: The Trinamul Chhatra Parishad in its first college campus success in South Dinajpur has swept the student union polls in all six institutions.
Till last year, Left Front-backed student outfits ran all the college unions in the district.
The Trinamul Chhatra Parishad had already bagged the unions of Gangarampur, Harirampur and Banshihari colleges uncontested.
Today, election was held in Balurghat College, Balurghat Girls’ College and Patiram Jamini Majumdar Memorial College and the results were announced in the evening.
Trinamul Chhatra Parishad won all seats at Patiram college. It won in Balurghat College, which was under the student wing of the RSP for the past 25 years.
In Balurghat Girls’ College, the Trinamul Chhatra Parishad bagged all 18 seats. The RSP student wing had been running the union ever since the college was established in the 1980s. In Balurghat College, the union has 56 seats and 33 went to the Trinamul Chhatra Parishad uncontested. Today, Trinamul’s student wing won 20 seats and Chhatra Parishad, which had fielded students for 21 seats, got two. No election was held in one seat.
This is the first time that polls were held in Patiram college and Trinamul Chhatra Parishad bagged all 18 seats.
“Trinamul Chhatra Parishad cadres had spread terror. Our candidates were spending sleepless nights fearing attacks. We could not file nominations,” said Tapas Mandal, SFI district secretary. The PSU, brought similar charges.
Atanu Roy, district president of the Trinamul Chhatra Parishad, said: “Students are no longer with the Left. People have faith on the chief minister and the results prove that.”
The turnout was around 19 per cent in Balurghat College, 28.53 in Balurghat Girls’ College and 59.73 in Patiram college. All six colleges are affiliated to Gour Banga University.
