Jalpaiguri blast trio in police net

Siliguri, Jan. 29: Police today announced the arrest of two senior KLO militants who, they said, had planted the IED in Jalpaiguri on December 26 and their link man.

The arrests were made in Khoribari block of Siliguri subdivision.

“We could arrest Narayan Roy and Pradip Roy, both portfolio holders in the KLO’s central committee. They are the persons who executed the IED blast in Jalpaiguri last month,” said Jawed Shamim, the inspector-general (north Bengal), this evening.

“We could also arrest Ramshankar Basak, who is otherwise a phuchka seller, but was actively involved in the blast,” the officer said.

On December 26, an IED went off on a culvert in Bajrapara in Jalpaiguri town, killing six persons and injuring three. Police officers during investigation had confirmed that the KLO was behind the attack.

“A special operation group (SOG) was formed to ensure a dedicated inquiry to get to the root of KLO’s activities and arrest the militants. Today, the SOG managed to arrest two of the KLO top brass,” Shamim said.

Police said Narayan Roy alias Tarun Thapa, is a resident of Rangdhamali in Belakoba under Jalpaiguri Sadar block. Pradip Roy alias Prananarayan Koch is from Mainaguri in Jalpaiguri while Basak, the linkman, is from Bhaktinagar police station area of Siliguri.

“Narayan is the deputy commander-in-chief of the KLO and ranks immediately after Shyam Roy alias Jamai, the commander-in-chief. On the other hand, Pradip is the assistant general secretary, that is, the second man after general secretary Kailash Koch. We had information earlier and today, they have reconfirmed that both had executed the plan of the bomb blast in Jalpaiguri,” Shamim said.

At the news conference, Shamim said Narayan and Pradip took Basak’s help, but did not elaborate on the role of the phuchka vendor.

The IED “was assembled elsewhere and brought to Jalpaiguri town”, he said. Motorcycles and bicycles have been used…. Some other people in the outfit are involved as they took the decision to carry out the blast. But these two implemented the decision and planted the IED,” Shamim said.
