United SC tie is postponed

Calcutta: The IFA Shield has run into rough weather even before the 118th edition has taken off.

Wednesday’s second match between United Sports Club and Geylang International FC has been postponed as the Singapore-based club did not arrive on Tuesday. The official statement from the IFA said: “The 2nd Match of 118th IFA Shield Tournament 2013-14 between United Sports Club and Geylang International FC, scheduled to be played on Wednesday, is being postponed for the time being. The next date for the match will be announced shortly.”

The IFA claimed that the team will be reaching on Wednesday evening, but confusion remains. When the postponed match will be played and whether Geylang are indeed interested in coming are not known. “We have got the necessary permission from the concerned ministries in Delhi,” IFA secretary Utpal Ganguli said. IFA joint assistant secretary Apurva Ghosh said: “While Geylang will be at midnight tomorrow, Dhanmundi will be coming at around 9 pm.”

An IFA source though said the MEA is yet to give the green light to both the teams. “But we are confident of getting that in the first hour on Wednesday. And the moment it comes we will send the necessary papers to the concerned authorities,” the source added.

Meanwhile, Mohammedan Sporting have showcaused their foreign brigade. Penn Orji, Luciano Sabrosa and Joshimar have gone AWOL and the club officials are seeing red. “They cannot take us for a ride. Yes there is some problem with the salary. But it’s just one month January has not ended, so how can they say we haven’t given January’s salary,” senior club official Qamaruddin Ahmed said on Tuesday. While Penn and Joshimar did not even bother to inform the club the reasons behind their absence, Luciano though said he was down with fever.

“We have told them if they do not fall in line they can leave the club. We will manage with a new set of foreigners,” the official added. Mohammedan Sporting though will see till Thursday morning if the trio return to practice or not.
