New Delhi: Controversial Belarusian long distance coach Nikolai Snesarev, who left India in a huff three years ago even after achieving spectacular results with his wards, is set to return and take charge of the athletes for the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.
Credited with shaping long distance runners Preeja Sreedharan, Kavita Raut and Sudha Singh into Asian Games medal winners, Snesarev left for Qatar in 2011 after the sports ministry refused to give the coach a salary hike as per his demands.
Sources said that with the Asian and Commonwealth Games round the corner, there was immense pressure on the government from both athletes and the national federation to bring back the Belarusian.
“Snesarev is coming back on his own terms… He would be paid a salary of $8,200 per month. He is expected to arrive in the next few days,” the source said. “His wife will be employed as a masseur.”
