Minority plea on RS seat

Imphal, Jan. 25: A minority community in Manipur today demanded that a Muslim leader be sent as a member of the Rajya Sabha from Manipur to look after their welfare. No one from the community, known as Meitei-Pangal, had been nominated to Rajya Sabha, Muslim organisations said. Manipur has one Rajya Sabha seat.

Eight organisations of the community today jointly submitted memoranda to UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Manipur PCC president Gaikhangam and chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh. They were urged to nominate a member from the minority community to the Rajya Sabha.

“If the Congress and the Ibobi Singh government care for the minority community, they should give the seat to us,” H. Khan, adviser of the All Manipur Muslim Students’ Organisation said.
