Tight security for parade path

Vigil on city entry-exit points

Bhubaneswar, Jan. 24: Police have made elaborate traffic and security arrangements for the state-level parade to be held on the occasion of the Republic Day on Sunday.

While 28 platoons of the police would be deployed in and around the Mahatma Gandhi Marg to ensure security, an anti-sabotage team complete with sniffer dogs would be deployed to check explosives at various strategic locations in the city, including Baramunda bus terminal, railway station and Biju Patnaik Airport.

The police said it would keep a strict vigil on the all the entry and exit points of the city. The police will also keep a tab on the movement of vehicles from Nakhara, Uttara Square, Nandankanan, Pokhariput-Jatani Road and Gangapada toll booth.

The police have also identified seven parking lots in and around Mahatma Gandhi Marg during the parade. These parking lots are located near BDA bus stand, railway station, open lots in front of the Congress Bhavan, Idcol auditorium, Jayadev Bhavan, SBI, Rabindra Mandap and Unit-II Girls’ High School ground.

The police have also imposed a ban on the sale of gas balloons or any other dangerous explosive substances along Mahatma Gandhi Marg from 6.30am till the parade is over on Sunday.

In 2002, 21 persons, including 14 schoolchildren, were injured following explosion of a gas cylinder meant to blow up balloons. The incident had taken place barely 200 metres from the parade ground.

Special director-general of police Sanjeev Marik said adequate security arrangements were in place to ensure a peaceful Republic Day in the state. “Our main focus would be on Maoist-dominated areas. Adequate security arrangements have been made in those areas for Republic Day,” said Marik.

The main attraction of the state-level parade to be held at Mahatma Gandhi Marg on January 26 would be daredevil stunts by 14 young girls on scooters. The girls, belonging to the Maharishi College of Natural Law, will present the famous Sukhoi formation.
