A 67-year-old woman died after allegedly being hit by her son, suffering from mental illness and thalassaemia, in a south Calcutta hotel on Wednesday night.
Supriti Bhattacharya fell off the bed and was lying on the floor when hotel employees entered her room. She was taken to SSKM Hospital where doctors declared her dead.
The 27-year-old son, Indranil, has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He has been remanded in police custody till February 1.
Police said the residents of Suri, in Birbhum, had come to the city last October for Indranil’s treatment and checked into the Sarat Bose Road hotel.
“The woman, who has retired from state government service, used to visit government and private health care units for her son’s treatment,” said an officer of Bhowanipore police station.
The cops are yet to find out what led to the death. “There are discrepancies in Indranil’s statement,” said the officer.
Hotel employees told the police that they had heard the woman’s screams from her room around 10.20pm on Wednesday. “They rushed to the room and on the way, heard Indranil’s screams, too. They broke open the door and saw the woman lying on the floor. Indranil was sitting on the bed,” said the officer.
There were injuries on the woman’s head that were probably caused by the fall from the bed.
Supriti was a widow and Indranil was her only child.
