Malda, Jan. 22: A domestic in Malda’s Gajole has alleged that she was raped by four youths in a car on Monday evening after one of them, an acquaintance, called her out of the house where she worked.
The 24-year-old victim, who filed a police complaint yesterday, has said the youths forced her to drink alcohol and raped her in a minivan. Residents found the woman lying unconscious on the roadside and took her to a local hospital.
Three youths who have been arrested have denied the charge of rape. The driver of the car, the fourth accused, is absconding. Gajole is around 35km from Malda town.
Police sources said Krishna Mudi, 25, the acquaintance of the woman, and his friends Pintu Biswas, 24, and Shyamal Singh, 26, were produced in the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Malda and remanded in police custody for five days.
The woman has been sent to Malda Medical College and Hospital for medical tests.
According to the police, the woman is from North Dinajpur district and she has been working as a domestic in a Gajole household for almost three years.
She knew Krishna, a part-time driver from the same area, for about a year.
According to police sources, the woman said Krishna had called her up on her cellphone around 7pm on Monday and asked her to meet him at a certain place. “The woman has told us that she was in the house where she worked when Krishna called her up. He was waiting in a minivan along with the driver and two other youths, whom the woman did not know,” said a police source.
“They went to a roadside eatery along the Malda-Gajole state highway, ordered food and consumed liquor. The woman has told us that she was forced to drink. After that, they left the eatery and took the minivan towards Balurghat and the woman was gang raped in the vehicle till she passed out,” the police source added.
The youths then dumped the woman on the Malda-Balurghat state highway. “Local people spotted her around 10pm and informed us. We admitted the woman to a hospital in Gajole. Her mother arrived here yesterday morning,” said the source.
The woman was discharged from the hospital yesterday. Later, she went to Gajole police station with her mother and lodged the complaint around 5pm.
“We have taken a written statement of the victim. She has told us that she was in love with Krishna,” the police source said. “Her father has passed away and her mother, also a domestic, stays in North Dinajpur.”
The police source said: “Krishna has said he was close to the woman for the past year or so, but denied having called her out of the house and raped her along with the others. Pintu and Shyamal stay in the same village where the woman stays. They work as labourers. We are yet to locate the car (in which the woman was allegedly raped) and its driver.”
Additional police superintendent, Shyam Singh, said the arrested youths were being interrogated. “ Gajole police are investigating the case. We are looking for the driver.”
