Court rejects Agrawal plea

Ranchi, Jan. 21: A special CBI court today rejected R.K. Agrawal’s petition for a breather in the 2012 Rajya Sabha poll cash-stash case.

In his petition, Agrawal pleaded not guilty and urged the court of R.K. Choudhary to remove his name from the list of accused persons submitted by the agency.

He contended that the CBI implicated him without concrete evidence.

Agrawal is currently lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi.

Dismissing his petition, the court fixed January 24 as the next date of hearing when charges will be framed against all the accused in the case.

Agrawal was in the fray as an Independent in the 2012 Rajya Sabha poll, which was later countermanded in view of the seizure of Rs 2.15 crore from an SUV linked to him on the day of polling.

Pawan Kumar Dhoot, JMM MLA Sita Soren, her father Badnarayan Manjhi and political aide Rajendra Mandal, Dhoot’s election agent Sunil Kumar Maheswari have been named accused in the case.

RS polls

The Congress and the JMM discussed their strategies for the coming Rajya Sabha polls with the Election Commission making a formal announcement for the biennial today.

Given the number of MLAs, Congress-JMM-RJD alliance can win only one of two seats that will go to polls. All the three parties are willing to send their own candidate to the Upper House, which has triggered a fresh spat among the allies.
