Girl under truck, injured

A 14-year-old girl was seriously injured when she came under the wheels of a truck at Pardih, Jamshedpur, on her way to school on Tuesday morning.

Kapali resident Rubi Kumari, who studies in Class VII in a government school in Pardih, has been admitted to Tata Main Hospital (TMH) with a fractured waist. She underwent a surgery in the evening and was stable till reports last came in.

Rubi was walking to her school, around 2km distance from her residence, with three of her schoolmates when the accident took place near Mango under Kapali thana outpost around 7.30am. According to Soni Kumari, one of the girls accompanying Rubi, they were walking on the left side of the road that had no pavement.

“Rubi, who was on the extreme right, suddenly screamed. As I turned, I saw her lying under a truck. She was stuck under one of the front wheels. We screamed in panic. Passers-by and local residents rushed to her rescue. The truck driver fled, leaving behind the vehicle. The crowd that had gathered at the spot by then put the truck in reverse gear and rescued Rubi from under the wheels,” Soni told The Telegraph.

The girls then informed Rubi’s parents, who rushed to the spot and took her to MGM Medical College and Hospital in Sakchi. As her condition was very serious, doctors referred her to TMH.

Rubi’s father Rajeshwar Sahu said his daughter had sustained multiple fractures. “I do not know how the truck ran over my daughter. She regularly walks to school. Her condition is very serious,” said Sahu, who is a mason.

Officer-in-charge of Kapali thana outpost Pervez Alam confirmed the accident, but said that the truck was yet to be seized.

“The truck is still at the accident spot. We will soon take necessary action against the driver,” said the officer-in-charge, adding that the road where the mishap took place does not witness heavy traffic.
