JMM leader killed in bomb attack

Jamshedpur, Jan. 20: The East Singhbhum JMM vice-president was killed in a bomb blast in Jamshedpur last night, in an attack that sources claimed to be a fallout of a land dispute. No body else was injured in the incident.

JMM leader Lakhai Hansda (34) sustained serious injuries when some assailants hurled a bomb at him near Karandih Square around 10.30pm. He was rushed to Tata Main Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Sources said Lakhai was about to get into his SUV when the criminals arrived in another SUV. One of them came out of the vehicle, threw a bomb targeting Lakhai, and sped away towards Potka.

The blast ripped apart the left portion of his abdomen and he fell on the road, said an eyewitness.

SSP Amol V. Homkar said police were yet to arrest any one in this regard. “Nothing can be said about the assailants and their motive at this juncture.”

Sources said police had recovered the SUV used in the murder from Mayurbhanj district of neighbouring Odisha.

Party sources said Lakhai was with district JMM president Ramesh Hansda merely a few minutes before the attack.

Ramesh said, “We had casually met at Karandih Square last night. After a small chat, I drove away towards my home (in Karandih) and Lakhai was about to start for his house (at Bheradipa in Bagbera).”

He said Lakhai was engaged in a dispute with Tuddu, also a JMM functionary, of Parsudih over a government plot in Ghaghidih.

The murder could be a fallout of the dispute, Ramesh added.
