New Delhi: A harsh observation by Hockey India (HI) secretary general Narender Batra on certain comments made by Aussie coach Ric Charlesworth snowballed into a major controversy on Friday after Hockey Australia (HA) decided to take up the matter with its Indian counterpart.
“We will be discussing the matter with Hockey India at the conclusion of the event as the specific comments made about our highly respected coach, we feel, were inappropriate,” said HA CEO Cam Vale.
On Friday afternoon, Batra, during a press briefing, said Charlesworth needed “psychological treatment.”
The HI secretary said this when a foreign journalist drew his attention to a Charlesworth statement that it was a disgrace that India was still being awarded tournaments by the international body (FIH) despite empty stands and poor showings by the home side.
“These are very strong words… Charlesworth should have some education about how to talk about a country. We also go to foreign countries… And we have better crowds here than there.”
