Farewell, friend

She went to school with Suchitra Sen and last met the actress in 1987. On Friday, Phulrani Chowdhury (Kanjilal), 84, was there at Belle Vue Clinic to bid farewell to her friend.

“I remember her as a very individualistic and strikingly beautiful girl even from a very young age. She did not even don a ghomta (cover one’s head with the pallu of the sari) when she got married in Pabna in 1946. We found it striking,” said Chowdhury, who had lost touch with the screen icon for the next 18 years.

A surprise awaited her when she went to see Sharey Chuattor at a theatre with her sisters.“When her character Romola came on screen, my sisters cried out that’s Ramadi (Suchitra’s original name )!”

Chowdhury met her classmate from Pabna Girls’ High School again in 1964 through her brother Jadu Chowdhury, a sound engineer in Tollywood films.

“She (Sen) hugged me when we met at her in-laws’ palatial house in Ballygunge, exclaiming ‘etodine eli’ (you have taken such a long while to meet me),” said Chowdhury, who published a book on her association with the actress in 2004.

The two remained in touch till 1987. “She stopped meeting people but we spoke over phone at times. The last time was one-and-a-half years ago.”
